How pastors should (& shouldn’t) use AI for sermons

February 20, 2025

Editor’s note: We recently sat down with Michael Whittle, founder and visionary of Pulpit AI to discuss the rise of AI and how churches can leverage it to amplify their message. Subsplash acquired Pulpit AI in December 2024 to help pastors increase the reach and impact of their sermons through discipleship content, social media clips, small group guides, and more [read more here].

“Do not trust AI.”

“Pretty sure this entire idea is evil.”

These are just some of the responses I woke up to on the Saturday after the launch of Pulpit AI was announced on social media, and it went viral.

After decades of serving in local church ministry, watching pastors pour their hearts into sermon preparation only to see their messages confined to Sunday morning, I knew there had to be a better way

But, I wasn’t prepared for the fierce resistance to using AI for ministry.

AI for pastors & the challenges of new technology

Here’s the thing—every single technological revolution in church history has faced this exact reaction. The printing press? Clergy worried it would undermine their authority. Radio and TV? Too “worldly.” And yet, here we are, still preaching the unchanging Gospel through ever-changing means.

The truth is, the voices of pastors have wielded profound influence for millennia—making them one of the most important voices in our culture. Theirs are the voices that shape communities, guide families, and speak truth in an age of confusion. And right now, these vital voices of pastors are being drowned out by the multitude of social media influencers and digital noise.

And that needs to change.

After partnering with thousands of pastors and ministries, I've discovered something profound: When a pastor’s voice is amplified beyond Sunday services, it’s more than just the extension of a message—it’s boosting the reach of careful, thoughtful, Spirit-led teaching to impact a world desperate for truth.

Now, let’s talk about what AI for pastors actually is and isn’t.

What AI is & isn’t for pastors

AI isn’t your ghostwriter. It’s not your theology professor. And it’s definitely not the Holy Spirit. If you're using AI to write your sermons, there’s a better way!

Here’s what AI is for our cultural moment: It’s the printing press of our generation. AI is a tool that can take your God-inspired, carefully crafted message and help it reach beyond Sunday morning. It’s your research assistant, your content multiplier, your reach extender.

The risks? They're real.

Using AI to generate sermons from scratch, I would suggest, isn’t the proper application. It betrays the trust of your congregation. It shortcuts the spiritual preparation that shapes you as much as your message.

Your people don’t need an AI-generated sermon. They need their pastor speaking truth in their specific context, led by the Spirit.

But here’s where it gets interesting.

Ethical AI practices & tools for pastors

The right AI tools for pastors can actually enhance your sermon preparation without compromising your integrity:

  • Want to dive deeper into Greek and Hebrew word studies? AI can help.
  • Need to find patterns across Scripture? AI can assist.
  • Looking to organize your research more effectively? AI’s got you.

Think of it like this: AI isn’t for writing your sermon. It’s for helping you study better, dig deeper, and get organized.

The real fun happens after you preach.

While many churches spend 10+ hours every week trying to turn their sermons into social media posts, small group materials, and discipleship resources, pastors and church leaders using Pulpit AI are spending that time where it matters most—in real, face-to-face ministry. In hospital rooms. In counseling sessions. In the messy, beautiful work of pastoral care.

How Pulpit AI takes care of everything after the sermon

Think about this for a moment: Every week, pastors across the world spend countless hours in prayer and study, crafting messages that speak directly to their congregations. Year after year, sermon after sermon, they’re building an archive of wisdom, insight, and Biblical truth. It’s a treasury of spiritual gold, typically locked away in audio files or dusty transcripts after Sunday passes.

That’s where Pulpit AI comes in. We scour your sermons—your voice, your theology, your heart for your people—and transform it into:

  • Daily devotionals that disciple your congregation throughout the week
  • Social media content that reaches your community where they are
  • Small group discussion guides that foster deeper conversation
  • Youth ministry resources that connect with the next generation
  • Training materials that equip your leaders

Maintain your voice and theology, all while giving back 10+ hours to your team every week.

Think about that. What could you do with 10 more hours every week? How many more lives could you touch? How many more conversations could you have?

Look, I’ve been in ministry long enough to know that change is hard. But, I’ve also been around long enough to know that failing to adapt is harder

The best AI tools for pastors offer a generational opportunity to advance the Kingdom—not by replacing pastoral gifts, but by amplifying them. By extending the voice of the pastor and its impact far beyond Sunday morning.

Pastor, use AI to multiply your impact

This isn’t just about a new, fancy technology. It’s about stewardship, taking the message God has given you, and allowing it to reach further than ever before.

It’s also about reclaiming time for what matters most—being present with your people.

“The fields are white for harvest” (John 4:35). The tools are in our hands. The voice of the local church matters now more than ever. Let’s amplify it!
