The AI-Equipped Church: Webinar recap & free ebook

April 23, 2026

What happens when AI meets the Church? This is the question on the minds of pastors, church leaders, and Christians worldwide as we grapple together with this new technology called Artificial Intelligence.

Yet Christians today can take comfort that we’ve been here before; technological innovations are not new concepts to the Church. The printing press first terrified people, and electric guitars were once considered scandalous and ungodly. The world has always continued to innovate, and the Church has always responded, sometimes to the detriment of Christians.

So, how can Christians better navigate new technology today? To address these issues head-on, Michael Whittle, VP of AI, and Ryan Schilling, Project Manager at Subsplash, came together for an exciting and forward-thinking conversation at a webinar called “The AI-Equipped Church: How to Leverage AI & Why Your Church Needs a Policy.”

Most churches and staff have zero guardrails about how AI is being used by their church. By engaging in this conversation today, we can choose to shape AI technology for the Kingdom—placing our congregants’ best interests and biblical integrity as the foundation of our usage of AI tools at church.

AI goes to church: Why your church needs a policy

Research reveals that 91% of church leaders support AI use in ministry, yet only 6% have established a formal AI policy.

This is more than a technical gap; it’s a leadership challenge.

In this webinar, we explain why having an AI policy is crucial for your church to navigate these new challenges. We also address how to prepare for AI use that derives from a theological foundation. As Michael Whittle says, “Our technology is always downstream from our theology.”

Along with our webinar on this important subject, Subsplash has created a free and downloadable ebook for church leaders called Digital Stewardship: A Church AI Policy Toolkit for Leaders.

To help your church get started on creating a church policy for AI, this ebook offers: practical guidance for church leaders, five conversation starters for church staff, fill-in-the-blank pages, as well as a Church Staff AI Policy Template. Packed with insightful stats and discussion questions, this ebook was created with your church in mind, giving you a head start!

As church leaders, it’s important to get clear on your values before you choose the right tech tools to engage with. That’s where an AI policy comes in. Take a look at some of the highlights from our webinar below!

The AI-Equipped Church Webinar Recap: Why an AI policy matters

1. The Creative Mandate

How do we fulfill the mandate God gave us to be builders while protecting the Imago Dei

God called us to be builders and stewards of his creation (Genesis 1:28), a mission that now includes the digital tools at our fingertips. While AI is a powerful resource to help us fulfill this “creative mandate,” it’s important to note that it lacks a soul—it cannot pray, repent, or replace the embodied presence of a pastor (John 1:14).

With that theological understanding, technology should amplify human beings, but never replace them. As discussed in the webinar, the pastor’s authority rests on knowing their community, which no algorithm can stimulate. By focusing on tools that can allow more room for more real-world community building, you help ensure that your pastoral authority remains rooted in your unique relationship with your congregation.

2. Navigating Hidden Risks

Did you know there are risks with AI that most churches are missing?

Using new technology often brings hidden challenges that go far deeper than simple data privacy–something few church leaders are aware of. Unchecked use of private data (e.g., uploading spreadsheets or prayer requests to public AI) is a breach of pastoral trust and a legal liability.

While it is a legal liability to upload sensitive church spreadsheets to public AI platforms, there is also the risk of eroding pastoral authority if we allow algorithms to become a primary source for theological advice. We must be wary of “secular salvific language”—the idea that technology alone can provide the renewal that only Christ offers.

Establishing a clear policy helps your leadership team identify where AI is already in use and ensures you are protecting the trust your congregation has placed in you. Additionally, an AI policy helps your church staff navigate important conversations around this salvific language and the theological reliability of AI with intelligence and preparedness. At a time when 40% of Gen Z and Millennials say asking AI for spiritual advice is as trustworthy as a pastor, church leaders should be leading conversations with their community about how to have better boundaries with AI.

Discover all five potential risks churches are facing today, and learn how your church can prepare to navigate these complex conversations.

3. Faithful Implementation

How can we extend the reach of a single sermon without burning out the staff? And what AI tools are at the forefront of church tech innovations today?

First of all, faithful AI adoption should follow the principle of multiplication rather than new generation. What does that mean?

Well, instead of using technology to create new theology from scratch, through innovative solutions like Pulpit AI, church leaders can “extract” from their own material—ensuring pastoral and biblical authenticity.

That means AI should not be relied upon to generate new theological material. Instead, it should be leveraging what you as the pastor have already created! This approach extends the reach of a single sermon and maintains pastoral integrity without burning out your staff.

As you move forward, remember that transparency is a Christian value. Always be clear when content is AI-assisted, and continue to maintain human oversight. Staying clear about when content is AI-assisted helps maintain the integrity your ministry requires.

Tools built with the Church in mind

The goal of technology in the church should always be to simplify your work so you can focus on your people! At Subsplash, we’ve developed two specific tools—Pulpit AI and Trends AI—to help you do exactly that.

Multiply your message with Pulpit AI

You spend hours every week preparing and delivering your sermons, but the impact shouldn’t end when the service is over. Pulpit AI helps you turn a single sermon into over 20 pieces of discipleship content—including social media clips, devotionals, and small group guides—all in your unique voice.

Over 10,000 churches are already using Pulpit AI! Because it’s now in the Subsplash Dashboard, you can go from your Sunday livestream to a week’s worth of engagement on one screen without ever re-uploading a file. It’s about making your message go further without adding more to your team’s to-do list, helping your church staff spend more time with people instead of behind a computer.

Church analytics are here with Trends AI

While Pulpit AI helps you share your message, Trends AI helps you understand your community. Most church leaders spend Monday mornings navigating fragmented spreadsheets to track attendance and giving. Trends AI changes that by consolidating your data into automated, daily dashboards.

You can even have Trends AI answer questions like “Who hasn’t checked into a small group in the last month?” or “Who has and has not been baptized at my church?”, helping you quickly get the insights you need for proactive pastoral care. By moving from guessing to facts, you can generate the exact insights you need about your congregation.

The world needs the Church in the AI conversation

The opportunity before our generation is the same one that stood before the Reformers when they encountered the explosive power of the printing press. By participating in the earliest days of AI technology, the Church can shape its development for the Kingdom.

To shrink from this moment is not wisdom. The world needs the Church in this conversation because we have been given God’s truth and wisdom, and are filled with His Spirit. We are uniquely positioned to understand the ethical and human questions at stake.

The full conversation packed with thought-proving insights and a Q&A session with church leaders will help your church leadership navigate AI with integrity, intentionality, and a biblical foundation.
