Faithful stewardship in the digital age: The Subsplash approach to church technology

January 7, 2026

Growing up, my family’s home was filled with powerful Bible teaching from many sources— including my grandfather, who was a pastor, and various books, radio programs, and tape and CD ministries. I saw firsthand how technology has always played a critical role in bringing the Good News to the world.

In 2005, my wife Kristy and I started Subsplash as a software consulting company. We were designing and building software experiences for world-class brands like XBOX, Samsung, and T-Mobile, all while praying that God would grow our company.

Then, in 2009, I heard a sermon challenging our church members to creatively use their gifts for the Gospel.

How Subsplash found its purpose

At the time, the iPhone was brand new, and we had built some of the first apps. We noticed that sharing and viewing sermons on mobile devices was complicated and clunky. It required churchgoers to work through a multi-step, manual process of downloading, importing, and syncing to a smartphone.

I thought, “If we can build this kind of innovative software for entertainment and business, we can certainly do it for the Gospel!”

Kristy and I felt God calling us to “trust and obey.” So, we invested all of our savings to build what became The Church AppTM, pioneering the first iPhone app for a church.

That initial step of faith set the course for Subsplash.

The very first church app went viral, seeing over 10,000 downloads in its first week. Other churches quickly signed up, enabling Subsplash to serve thousands of church leaders and see millions of people reached with the Gospel. We quickly expanded our apps to Android, iPad, and Apple TV, while also adding the Subsplash Media Player.

But in 2016, we saw another struggle: financial technology vendors were burdening churches with hidden fees and high donation processing rates. We knew churches needed a true partner in ministry, not just another vendor. Once more, we prayed and felt a call to “waste it all on Jesus.”

We set out to create a beautiful, simple giving platform with no monthly subscription cost and the best return on investment in the industry. We introduced GrowCurve, an innovative approach that automatically gives your church better processing rates as your giving grows.

This means the benefits of growth are shared with your ministry, not captured by a vendor. Over the last few years alone, we’ve given millions of dollars to churches through GrowCurve.

Why seamless integration matters

For two decades, our mission has been singular: to glorify God and proclaim Jesus is Lord. We have been doing this specifically by providing technology that honors God’s resources while advancing the mission of the local church.

Today, many churches use a fragmented system—a patchwork of disconnected vendors for their website, giving, mobile apps, and other services. This creates an enormous burden, and the most overlooked cost that is measured both in dollars and in time.

When systems don’t communicate, your staff loses hundreds to thousands of hours every year on things like:

  • Manual data reconciliation & duplicate entry.
  • Troubleshooting integration failures.
  • Hours of downloading, uploading & editing sermon videos.
  • Coordinating multiple vendor relationships.

This wasted time represents significant amounts of lost time and energy—resources that could be invested directly in ministry and discipleship.

The greater, more tragic cost is from lost ministry opportunities. When a member gives or registers for an event, fragmented systems prevent the automated follow-up and personalized connection needed to move them forward in their spiritual journey. Ministry stalls when staff are burdened with and are even drowning in administrative tasks.

Stewardship, not just software

We built the Subsplash Platform from the ground up to drastically simplify and eliminate this complexity—delivering maximum impact or Return on Investment (ROI) for the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) in the industry.

TCO is an important term that encompasses all of the costs it takes to run your system, including subscription, processing, and staffing. It’s important to include all these factors in your decision-making for evaluating the efficiency, effectiveness, and overall stewardship of your investment in technology.

The Subsplash integrated platform multiplies precious staff time and human capital by seamlessly connecting giving, media, website, management, and communication tools. This enables your team to accomplish way more as they focus on reaching people, equipping them, and encouraging them for the Gospel and Great Commission. With Subsplash, you can supercharge your ministry and its overall impact.

You gain:

  • Peace of mind: Your teams have one unified platform and a dedicated support team to help you accomplish your strategy.
  • Strategic clarity: Data flows through one system, providing clear insights for effective ministry and measurable kingdom impact.
  • Mission accomplishment: Staff spend less time on mundane tasks and invest more time into high-value ministry impact.

The measure of any church technology shouldn’t be a feature list; it should be: Are we making the most of our opportunity to multiply and mature disciples?

If you’re evaluating technology for your church, my encouragement is simple:

  • Look at how you can maximize your ministry effectiveness.
  • Go beyond the surface price to evaluate the true TCO (total cost of ownership).
  • Ask how your church can accomplish more to engage with guests, visitors, and members to help them grow in their walk with Jesus.
  • Ask what it’s really costing your team in time, energy, and focus.
  • Ask whether your tools are accelerating your mission or slowing it.

Our integrated approach enables you to track spiritual growth journeys and personalize engagement at scale. You can multiply your ministry impact by connecting an online gift to discipleship next steps, an event registration to small group recommendations, and sermon engagement to personalized content.

What we’ve seen over 20 years

Over the past two decades, we’ve had the privilege of serving more than 20,000 leading churches and ministries all over the world to reach billions of people with:

  • 2.3 billion app launches worldwide
  • 1 billion media plays
  • 100 million Subsplash app downloads
  • 22 million messages sent via Subsplash Messaging
  • 2 million live streams to 30 million viewers
  • 24 million donors giving through Subsplash Giving

Each number represents more than a metric. It represents a real person, a living story, and an eternal soul. Every app launch, livestream, message, and media play opens another door for God’s Word to reach hearts around the world, across cultures and time zones.

Behind the data are stories that inspire us. We’ve watched small teams do far more than they thought possible. We’ve seen leaders reclaim and maximize their time and energy. We’ve seen churches grow in size and health which is a huge blessing to them and to us.

Most importantly, souls around the world have been transformed by the Gospel. Churches choosing faith over comfort, adopting new tools, and watching God move in powerful, undeniable ways.

Looking ahead

Today, Subsplash is stronger than ever. We’re financially stable, deeply committed to the long term, and focused on thoughtful innovation to maximize stewardship and potential of your congregation.

Our recent relationship with Roper Technologies has given us additional resources to invest and grow, while preserving the independence and mission focus that have always defined us.

We’re still here to serve.
We still believe simplicity honors God’s resources.
And we still believe the Church deserves better than technology that competes with its calling.

A final word to church leaders

To pastors and church leaders around the world: stay focused on what matters most. Keep sharing the Gospel boldly. Keep seeking God with open hands and asking how you can reach one more person, one more family, one more community.

The work you’re doing has eternal impact, even on days when it feels unseen. Please know this: we’re cheering you on every step of the way, and we’re committed to building the very best software to support your mission.

At Subsplash, we exist to help you grow and accelerate the reach of your congregation as you fulfill the Great Commission. Technology is not the mission, but it can remove barriers, open doors, and help the message of Jesus travel farther and faster than ever before.

Thank you for the faithfulness, sacrifice, and perseverance you bring to your calling. Your work matters more than you know. We count it a true privilege to come alongside you, reduce friction, and help you spend less time managing tools and more time doing what God has called you to do: love people, make disciples, and share the hope of the Gospel with the world.

Here’s to a safe and joy-filled New Year!
